What is LGBTQ?

LGBTQ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer. These terms are used to represent how people portray their sexual orientation or gender identity.

What is LGBTQ?

While LGB refers to sexual orientation; attraction of men to women (heterosexual), men or women to both sexes (bisexual), and either man to men or women to women (homosexual). The TQ part refers to gender identity. Transgender is an umbrella term for people who are not or later turn out to disassociate from the gender assigned since birth. Whereas Q stands for queer or questioning, which means many people are still completely unsure if they belong to either of the two genders.

How LGBTQs are treated across the world:

Although many people have accepted the fact that lesbians, gays, bisexuals,   trans genders, and queers must be provided with equal rights as any other human being, much of the worlds’ population is still against these norms and act according to their stereotypical mindset. There is discrimination everywhere!  At an early age, people learn that it’s at best different to be LGBT. And many of us are taught that this difference is bad — shameful, deviant, disgusting. This has a great impact on LGBTQs. They learn that even if their family accepts them, there might be relatives or people living in society who would judge them; and so they are asked to even hide, causing no discomfort to such judgmental people.

We usually still come across news about LGBT people being attacked physically, verbally, and being killed for who they are or even in the name of family honor. This causes nothing but fear into the hearts of such people, making them keep their identities or sexual orientation a secret. In many cases, they are even forced to act like a heterosexual, get married to the opposite gender, even if their gender says otherwise; they are tortured mentally.

The suicidal rate in the LGBTQ communities and what causes it:

According to Wikipedia, research has found that attempted suicide rates and suicidal ideation among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, etc. (LGBT) youth are significantly higher than among the general population. Discrimination against LGBT people has been shown to have significant negative impacts on the physical and mental health and well-being of LGBT youth; for example, depression and drug use among LGBT people have been shown to increase a lot over time. Bullying of LGBTQ is one of the major reasons why they commit suicide.

What is being done to prevent problems caused to LGBTQ Youth?

People, who understand how important it is to treat LGBTQ youth as one of us and not an outcast, are helping the world become a better place. Since many of LGBTQs are not provided with basic facilities of healthcare and education, as they are made uncomfortable with their gender or sexual orientation; Separate healthcare and education systems are being established where these people can easily access the basic facilities and services they require, without trying to hide their sexual identities and just being themselves. Pride month is celebrated every year to show respect to the LGBTQ youth and make them feel loved.

A few years ago, a law was passed in the US which stated that same-sex marriages are now legal. Since then, it has been legalized in many places. Online movie streaming platforms and people who are evolving along the world are now making LGBTQ characters a constant thing in their movies or TV series to show how they are equally important. Nevertheless, people nowadays are widely supporting each other through social media and raising their voices for fellow LGBTs.
